It's been two years since a young man named Artyom left his home station of VDNKh on a perilous journey to Polis. A year since the rangers brought a fiery death to the Dark Ones, razing the Botanical Gardens and wiping their inhabitants from the face of the Earth. Metro-2 has come under Polis' control, much to the anger of the Red Line, the Reich and the Hansa. After two decades of nuclear winter, the surface has begun to thaw and the Sun and the Moon are now visible again in the sky. Plants have started to reconquer Moscow's abandoned ruins, in some places creating veritable jungles of mutated trees, bushes and vines. But stalkers and caravans moving across the surface have also reported the rise of new, even more dangerous mutants.
The Dark Ones have become part of the Metro's legends, with many doubting they ever existed. VDNKh, the station that faced the unknown creatures, has now recovered from the Dark Ones' devastating impacts and is now a thriving producer of "mushroom tea". As a precaution, the tunnel to Botanichesky Sad has been walled up, with only a heavily guarded door leading through the obstruction. However, few stalkers dare venture into the blasted wasteland of the Gardens, as they are reportedly haunted.
The Reds and the Nazis, after years of bloody war, have finally managed to sign a fragile armistice. The Reich's absurd racial laws have lead to a massive exodus of those deemed unfit by said laws, and their population has dwindled far too much to wage a long war against the Communists. The Red Line, on the other hand, has gained enough time to lick its wounds and reconstruct its damaged supply lines. Its people are starving, and with the war over, food shipments are being rushed from the Ring Line and Polis.
But even with the Dark Ones gone and the Metro "saved", there are still sightings of tall dark creatures in remote parts of the Metro. None of these tales are taken seriously, however, as they usually occur in the vicinity of abandoned stations. The Metro's hordes of nosalises have grown since Artyom's time, and even the stronger stations are reporting attacks from the loathesome creatures.
It may be Nuclear Spring, but the Metro is still a place of death, hunger and misery.
