Even though Mankind has been reduced to a mere fragment of what it once was, one does not stop evolution. Radiation hasn't only spawned the terrible mutants that the Metro's inhabitants must compete with for survival, but has also affected the humans' genes and lead to the apparition of mutants amidst the human population. Mutations among humans are still rather rare, although the most basic kind of "adaptation" (or mutation) to the underground environment one could cite is albino or abnormally pale children.
Other somewhat more spectacular mutations have also been observed, but nobody knows what causes them exactly. Some say it's exposure to a certain dose of radiation, or the influence of unknown mutagenic chemicals, while others say that mutants are merely a product of evolution. Mutants are often shunned from most stations, as they are oft considered to be dangerous monsters. Those who are born with a visible mutation are often abandoned at birth, and seldom survive. Others who have acquired a mutation in adulthood are often banished from their communities and are forced to live as vagrants, but some still find a place somewhere.
---------------------------------------------
Evidently, mutations are strictly controlled, and there are certain rules that must be respected.
1) If you want your character to have a mutation, PM a member of staff about it.
2) Purely aesthetic mutations (ie purple hair) will not be accepted. A mutation is to be considered, first and foremost, to be an adaptation to your character's environment, so mutations must be useful somehow.
3)When we say "mutation" we are not talking about X-Men style mutation. A mutation does not give your character super-powers, it only provides him/her with a certain advantage in certain conditions. Therefore, psionic powers, super strength and other comic book stuff are banned.
