Name: Demian Zaitsev
Birthplace: Polis.
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Faction affinity and faction relations: On excellent terms with Polis, where he is part of the Brahmin caste. Due to his Polis origins he is neutral or friendly to all the Metro's large factions.
Physical description: Tall thin and pale with green eyes, Demian seems to stand apart from other Metro dwellers. He is clean, well-shaved and wears a pair of small round glasses. His hair is completely shaved to mark him as a part of Polis' Brahmin caste, and he wears the same subdued robes as his fellow savants.
Personality: Demian is quiet, well-mannered and literate. He is also a bit of a dreamer and can drift off into his own thoughts or become empassioned by a particular subject, object or situation. He is first and foremost a man of intellect and is quite rational. He also abhors violence, but is still unaware that brutality and death truly reign supreme outside Polis.
History: Demian was one of those children born merely a few hours after the bombs fell. His parents had been in close proximity to the Lenin Library when the sirens started wailing, and had been among the first to descend underground and into the cluster of stations that would later become Polis. Unlike many of his own age, Demian grew up surrounded by books and knowledge and light. Every station in Polis was well-lit with pre-war lightbulbs, and the Zaitsevs lived in an "apartment" made of salvaged wood and rubbish. Demian also grew up with tales of the past filling his ears and mind, and he, much like the other Brahmins, developed a passion for the past. He began to collect picture books and photographs of Moscow and other major cities.
He attended Polis' school and learned about literature and history when others of his age where learning how to grow mushrooms, tend pigs and save lamp oil. His upbringing was, all in all, remarkably sheltered. At the age of 18 he chose to join the Brahmin caste and dedicate his life to preserving pre-war knowledge and culture. His life would have continued undisturbed had a young man named Artyom not showed up at Polis bearing tales of terrible monsters threatening the Metro. The matter was promptly forgotten by the bookish elite, but Demian became deeply fascinated with the things happening outside Polis' island of protected light. He collected all the tales of war, starvation and disease he could get from travellers and soon he began to realise just how far humanity outside of Polis had fallen.
One day, while reading an old edition of National Geographic, Demian decided he would set out on a trip around the Metro and write about his adventures. Much to his elders' disapproval, he proclaimed himself a "journalist" and made a deal with a major Polis news publisher. With funds from the publisher, he purchased a weapon, food and a map of the Metro and within a few days had left his cosy home station.
Preferred weapon(s): Makarov PM, knife, Uboyneg.
Notes: No combat experience and has never seen a mutant before.
