On one hand I thought it was beautiful and atmospheric. On the other hand, I thought the story was mind-numbingly pretentious. I have no problem with stories that make you think, or stories that need interpretation. But I felt that Dear Esther was overdoing the concept to the point where it used, "It's up to your interpretation," as a crutch. What I mean by that is, plenty of the best stories in history require a good deal of interpretation, but at the same time, most of those stories have a sense of direction, the assurance that there actually is a story behind all the interpretation, the best example I can think of being Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko was confusing as fuck, but there was an actual story. I just feel that if a game like Dear Esther has no concrete story and relies completely on interpretation, those interpretations don't really hold much weight to the objective quality of its narrative overall. It might hold weight for the person who made the interpretation, and that's fine. I just don't think it makes sense to claim that Dear Esther has an objectively good narrative if it doesn't have an actual narrative. I would've felt different if the game didn't advertise itself as having a set, concrete story (which it might, and I could just be an idiot. But based on the evidence I've seen I strongly doubt it, until further evidence changes my mind) and was instead advertised as a creative mind exercise, which would make Dear Esther a decent one.
tl;dr I think Dear Esther is Interpretation Simulator 2012, but it's just my opinion and I could be wrong.

I've played Dear Esther. It was very... interesting...
I don't think I actually understood it all that well but it looked nice.

I see your point, I feel it was made to demonstrate what company could make rather than have a solid story or plot.
I spent longer than usual exploring that island.

Proprietary software is stuff that does the most spying, so "everyone spies on you nowadays" is not entirely true. It is when you live in the home of the NSA, and you are friends with people really in deep with the occupy movement. Information is out there anyone with time a some know how can get anything on you. I mean look at the Fraping, if citizen based hackers can do that so can the government. Hey tharina is that a battlenet icon I see? Do you play harthstone?
