As I examined the Metro map today I had an old idea return. Why not implement roleplay-induced changes into the setting? As you all know, the current setting is completely static and hasn't changed at all since the site opened back in 2011/2012. The Dark Ones are still dead, the Red Line and the Reich hate each other, Hansa's fat and rich...but what about change?
Say a new type of mutant appears and poses a grave threat to the Metro? Wouldn't the survivors unite to fight this common threat?
Or if the Fourth Reich succumbed to internal conflicts and the Neo-Nazis were replaced by another brand of right-wing extremists?
Or if the Jehovah's Witnesses amassed a huge cult and launched a crusade?
Or if the Dark Ones finally came back?
I believe incorporating such plots and having them actively change the setting would be exciting.
Also, a few months ago a member proposed the exploration and colonisation of abandoned/unexplored stations. Unfortunately, he was too jingoistic in his vision, and he wanted the survivors to exterminate all mutant lifeforms and "win" the RP. However, once stripped of the bad ideas, the central idea is actually pretty interesting. What if players could go and found their own faction?
Of course, the founding of a new faction would have to be done according to certain rules. I was thinking of implementing a dice-based system to determine the success/failure and general growth of a new faction.

I'm down with that, I see a few of my characters not be to happy about a new group and the rest wanting to join up.

Opal with her own faction? I think my imagination just had an orgasm. I honestly wonder how that would play out and the idea amuses me greatly.
And if I where to choose from the above choices that you suggested I like the idea of new mutants or the Dark Ones returning, but then those are the ones I think my characters would have the most 'fun' in. I would suggest others but I don't think I know the lore well enough... (I really need to read the books

Ohh, could there possibly be the chance of a big site wide plot?

Mayhaps. The trouble with a site-wide plot is that it's very hard to coordinate and collapses the second someone important leaves.

Hmm, good point. As for making new factions, would approved factions have their own sections on the rp subforums, like, alongside the Red Line, Undercity, etc?

Perhaps, perhaps! I'm not entirely sure yet. We have to be careful not to stretch the boards too much and clutter up the site.

It sounds like an interesting idea, I can see Sonya forming a small group of survivors/adventurers. Seems a bit unlikely for her though.

I love these ideas, Joe. The idea of making our own factions is very cool.
And as Joe said before site-wide plots are very difficult. We tried one before but important contributors just disappeared. So if we do make a big plotline everyone should at least be aware that the plot that they signed up for relies on their participation.

I agree, while Alexi is definitely sided with Polis, I like the idea of expanding. As for a site wide plot, I think we have a pretty decent and devoted group right now. But, maybe we assign each person a day or something?

I forgot to add that I do like, alongside the Jehovah's Witness cult, the idea of the Dark Ones returning. Last Light did reveal some things, which I suppose should be addressed on the site eventually.

Maybe A few new bases/trading posts on the surface. To slowly have the metro dwells take back the ruins, maybe venture outside the city's limit to the suburbs of the countryside.

Arbat is falling, Hanza is ruling. Some, uh, -real- capitalists may want to remake the North Metro, so... I think this is a good idea. Just by that note, I also think that a developing story, not necessarily a Site-wide plot but a changing, real world would be nice, as you had suggested. I don't think that our personal factions should be Dice-based, though. RP, Story based would be better, I think. Dice are too random.

I'm just worried such a system would bring about overpowered/dumb factions.

Setting restrictions like they can only reach a certain percentage of influence with cannon factions % gain or loss would be decided by dice rolls and maybe set restrictions like type of I'd guess you'd call it culture. Like order based might be like the Reds and since they have a similar focus/ideals they might get along better then say with Hansa or the Reich. Commerce might be more capitalistic, Purity keeping mutants out of the gene pool ect. Duty/Research might be something like Polis...this is starting to sound like Civ 5
